2018 JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Award Winners Revealed
2018 JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Award Winners Revealed
PETALING JAYA, 8 September 2018 – The 2018 JCI Malaysia Sustainable Development Award (JCIM SDA) Grand Award Ceremony & Charity Gala was held at Grand Ballroom, New World Petaling Jaya Hotel, officiated by Mr Stefan Priestner, United Nations Resident Coordinator for Malaysia and UNDP Resident Representative for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a universal call to action to end poverty, to protect the planet and ensure that everyone enjoy peace and prosperity. In year 2016, JCIM National Board of Directors endorsed the JCIM Sustainable Development Award to be conducted as a National Project and 2017 was the first year JCIM organised the JCIM Sustainable Development Award (JCIM SDA). Beginning year 2018, this prestigious national project is outsourced to local organisations to host, hence JCI Petaling Jaya became the first local organisation to host it in 2018 on behalf of JCI Malaysia.
The JCIM SDA is granted to sustainable projects conducted by Malaysian companies and organisations that advance any of the UN Sustainable Development Goal. The objective of the JCIM SDA is to raise awareness of UNSDGs to the public as well as to recognise companies/organisations that have organised projects that help advance these goals. There are 17 categories to compete for based on the UNSDGs and the “Best of the Best Project” award is granted to the most outstanding and sustainable project that helps to advance the most goals.
All entries were audited by the members of Chartered Accountant Australia and New Zealand, and evaluated by a panel of independent professionals judges namely Professor Datuk Dr Denison Jayasooria, Co-Chair of Malaysian CSO SDG Alliance & Principal Research Fellow Institute of Ethnic Studies (KITA); The Economic Planning Unit (EPU) Judging Committee, Ministry of Economic Affairs Malaysia; Ms. Juanita Joseph, Head of the Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator (RCO) in Malaysia; and Ms. Yasmin Rasyid, Founder and President of EcoKnights & Vice Chairman Malaysia Environmental NGOs (MENGO). All nominations were judged under three sections namely project background, project impact and project sustainability.
16 winners and 1 Best of the Best Winner was announced during the 2018 JCIM SDA Grand Award Ceremony and Charity Gala. All winners receive a customized trophy and certificate of recognition.
Guest of Honour Mr. Stefan Priesner, United Nations Resident Coordinator for Malaysia, UNDP Resident Representative for Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam mentioned that “the five pillars of the SDGs i.e. people, planet, peace, prosperity and partnership are all interconnected. We can’t have one, without the other. JCIM has therefore, done well in prioritizing its focus on leaving no one behind and partnership for the 2018 JCIM Sustainable Development Award”.
JCI Senator Kelvin Chew, 2018 JCI Malaysia National President encouraged all the winners and finalists to collaborate with JCIM and its local organizations nationwide in conducting impact projects that help to advance the SDGs, as JCI is a partner to United Nations globally.
Mikasa Chong, Organising Chairperson of 2018 JCIM SDA expressed her gratitude to her fellow committee members, whose efforts were crucial in making the JCIM SDA 2018 a great success. She also expresses her gratitude to the local celebrities and influencers who have stepped up to be the goodwill ambassadors to promote the UN SDGs to the public.
Eric Low, 2018 JCI PJ President, expressed gratitude to JCI Malaysia NBOD and members for granting the hosting rights to JCI PJ, and welcome all the winners and finalist to collaborate for future projects. He also welcomed JCI PJ sister chapter from Hong Kong, JCI City for joining to witness this prestigious ceremony.
As the host organisation of 2018 JCIM SDA, JCIPJ has collaborated with University Malaya Medical Center to raise funds for the Leukemia and Cancer Trust Fund. Hence a portion of the tickets sold for the JCIM SDA Grand Award Ceremony this year will be donated to this fund.
