Post production of The rise of skywalkers

KKMM PROUDLY ANNOUNCES THAT MORE THAN 100 MALAYSIAN TALENTS WERE INVOLVED IN THE PRODUCTION OF THE MANDALORIAN & STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER (EPISODE IX)

KUALA LUMPUR, 3 December 2020 – Base Digital Production Sdn Bhd (Base Digital Production) announced that its team of homegrown talents produced visual effects for The Mandalorian TV series and the ending episode of the Star Wars trilogy. This engagement was made possible because of the continuous support from the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (KKMM) and the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS). Malaysia is now gaining recognition as a preferred destination for film production and post-production activities by filmmakers worldwide.

En. Shakib Ahmad Shakir, Deputy Secretary-General, Minister of Communications Multimedia (KKMM), highlighted that "amidst this pandemic, it is of paramount importance to KKMM that business sustainability and employment is secured. The FIMI incentive has substantially aided in keeping businesses afloat and retaining steady employment, especially in the digital business industry, such as the visual effects and animation sector. The ministry also emphasizes the training and upskilling of Malaysian talents to ensure they are well equipped and proficient in this digital era. I am confident that with the commitments and inspiring outcomes of Base Digital Production, we are on the pathway of shaping a viable future for Malaysia's digital industry with world-class talents."

The recent premiere of The Mandalorian Season 2 on Disney+ caught the attention of many Malaysians after learning that the USD100mil TV series received financial support from FINAS under the Film In Malaysia Incentive (FIMI). Through FIMI, the Malaysian Government awards international production studios with a 30% subsidy for all expenditures made in Malaysia, be it for filming or post-production activities. By doing so, the Malaysian Government has allowed for the cost of production to be competitively comparable with neighbouring countries while producing exceptional visual effects and providing Malaysian talents with the opportunity to work on Hollywood films. A total of 78 artists in Malaysia produced a portion of the visual effects for Season 1 and 2 of The Mandalorian TV series with Qualifying Malaysian Production Expenditure ("QMPE") of USD1.5 million. A total of 70 artists produced a portion of the visual effects for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Episode IX) with a QMPE of USD700K.

Dr. Ahmad Idham, CEO of FINAS, said "FIMI has attracted big titles to invest in Malaysian-based production companies, and there are more to come. With that said, Malaysia is now gaining recognition internationally as a preferred hub for visual effects and post-production activities. FINAS will continue in its efforts to develop the film and creative industry in Malaysia and develop local talents to position Malaysia as the preferential destination for international productions."

Mr. Sailash Kumar, General Manager of Base Digital Production, said "over the years, Base Digital Production has taken the time to train local artists to be able to produce high-end visual effect shots of Hollywood standards. Local talents are also holding supervisorial and management positions in Base Digital Production, which is no simple task as it takes years of experience across different studios."

In a virtual press conference, two artists representing Base Digital Production, Edmund Wong and Nicole Maria Nonis, shared their insights on the creative industry in Malaysia and their journey as artists.

Edmund, a local talent, launched his career as a trainee under Shawn Kelly and Kevin Martel for Lucas Film before transferring to ILM SG to work on the animated feature, Rango, where he remained in Singapore for ten years. With big titles approaching Base Digital Production, the accomplished artist can now add on to his already staggering list of high-profile films while residing in Malaysia. Muhammad Hafeez Salleh took the opportunity to join Base Digital Production in 2018 and was hired as a compositor after seven years of working independently as a freelancer. The Mandalorian project proved to be an important milestone for his career.

Nicole rapidly rose through the artist ranks for her skill and resourcefulness with experience on set and post-production. She began her career in VFX with Double Negative Singapore and moved to Rising Sun Pictures in Australia before joining Base Media in Beijing. Nicole is experienced in both the client and studio side of VFX. She is currently a Producer at Base Digital Production leading the training of the production team as well as resource management. Her credits include Aquaman, Peter Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok, Logan, Alien Covenant, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Star Trek: Beyond, Terminator Genisys, and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II.

Mr. Sailash added "with FIMI, we are also able to bring back Malaysian talents that left their families behind and travelled abroad in search of a career in the field of visual effects and animation. Base Digital Production has now recruited approximately 10 Malaysian artists that have been working overseas and provided them with a sustainable platform here in Base Digital Production, allowing them to pursue their passion in visual effects and animation."

Malaysia has also seen a spill-over effect as a result of FIMI's successes as local universities such as, Multimedia University (MMU) and The One Academy (TOA) have started to enrol programs on visual effects.

In time, with the continuous support from the Ministry and FINAS, we will welcome a bigger pool of local talent that will drive the creative industry in Malaysia to greater strength and international recognition.

Kindly visit www.filminmalaysia.com for more information on The Film In Malaysia Incentive (FIMI).

Retrospective of Datuk Seri Garry's achievements

Retrospective of Datuk Seri Garry's achievements.

Datuk Seri Garry Chua

The founder and group executive chairman of ROTOL Group doubles as president of the Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA).

MRCA Immediate past President Datuk Seri Garry Chua

He has been MRCA President from 2016 to 2020 and his passion and willingness to dedicate his time and effort to the association were quickly recognised. As he ends his tenure, we look back at his achievements as President.

Having been an industry H stalwart for a few decades, Datuk Seri Garry Chua has been a part of MRCA for more than 20 years. His passion and willingness to dedicate his time and effort to the association was quickly recognised.

Soon, he was elected vice-president, a position he held for more than 10 years. His vision for MRCA was evident, leading him to be elected president in April 2016.

After accepting the role, he laid out plans to strengthen MRCA’s role in the Malaysian business community. The plan included: • Boosting membership • Strengthen governmental and stakeholder engagement • Enhancing media exposure for MRCA and members • Encouraging more training by the MRCA Academy • Bigger CSR events • MIRF, conferences, CEO Night • Talent development

Being true to his words, Datuk Seri Garry has delivered his promises over and beyond. Now, MRCA has more than 500 member companies, many of which are industry pioneers and leaders in their own fields. The respective heads of these members companies also serve in the MRCA committee board and on the board of advisors.

MRCA has also secured corporate patrons such as Maxis Berhad, Fusionex International and RHB Banking Group, and connecting with the nation’s largest associations such as MACEOS, PIKOM, Malaysia Shopping Mall Association, Malaysia Gift Premium Association and Kuala Lumpur Chinese Chamber of Commerce, among others.

MRCA has also been in constant engagement with relevant ministries, governmental agencies, regional trade associations and business chambers.

This has led to many overseas mission and familiarisation trips to Vietnam, Taiwan, Cambodia and many more.

With such trips, MRCA members are in a unique position to meet other governmental bodies and the business community in each country. This greatly helps members to navigate the business landscape as well as gain insights into other business opportunities in each country.

This has resulted in several collaborations and joint ventures between Malaysian and oversea companies to expand their businesses in Malaysia and their home countries.

“As a trade association of this size, MRCA has a lot of pull. After hearing feedback from our members, we can present their issues, concerns and suggestions to other industry stakeholders and government policymakers.

“It also gives us leverage to secure meetings with trade associations in other countries. It is not something a single company can pull off in a short timeframe,” said Datuk Seri Garry who also initiated three local MRCA chapters, in the states of Johor, Perak, and Penang.

Representing MRCA, Datuk Seri Garry has sat in many meetings with policymakers to ensure the voice of the retail and franchise industry is taken into account. The level of engagement has not been affected despite the changes in the federal government.

Apart from regular events and press releases, Datuk Seri Garry has pushed for a dedicated annual media engagement programme, inviting top editors of all media platforms – print and online – to an afternoon get-together.

“We have more than 100 events every year. While some are held inhouse, we have many large-scale events that are of great benefit to the industry and public. Through this special media engagement programme, we are able to get the word out while helping to garner publicity for our members.

“I hope that our members will continue this tradition as it has been proven to work very well,” said Datuk Seri Garry.

Members are able to directly meet the press to exchange views on how to better secure media coverage and publicity. This also includes MRCA’s Malaysia Retailer magazine. Published every quarter, the magazine features interesting members on the cover, sharing their experiences and life stories. The magazine also shares the numerous events and training MRCA organises.

Another great publication is the MRCA Who’s Who Directory, collating the association’s history, development, personalities and information on all members. It allows those who are interested in working with MRCA member companies to get to know every one of them.

Speaking of training, Datuk Seri

Garry has made efforts to improve the MRCA Academy, providing better resources to conduct relevant training programmes. These programmes have benefited staff members in areas such as management, sales, human capital, consumer habits and spending, digital marketing, social media and many more.

They are conducted by certified trainers all year round at the MRCA head office.

Meanwhile, corporate social responsibility has always been the core of MRCA. Under Datuk Seri Garry’s leadership, the association has boosted charity events, dispensing much-needed fund to deserving charity organisations.

“There are always segments in society that needs a helping hand. We are fortunate to be in a position to offer help. So, it is our duty to extend as much time and resources to the most underprivileged in Malaysian society.

“With our MRCA Charity Foundation, I’m confident that our members will always be ready to carry out their corporate social responsibility when the need arises,” he said.

Among the flagship annual CSR programmes are the MRCA charity run and golf tournaments. In conjunction with festive member dinners, MRCA also allocates funding for charity purposes. The disbursement is overseen by MRCA Charity Foundation.

Another feather in MRCA’s cap is the Malaysian International Retail and Franchise Exhibition (MIRF). The exhibition is an ambitious undertaking, attracting top industry players to Malaysia. It is a good springboard to market in Asia as well.

Popular sectors in MIRF are food and beverage, retailing, education, beauty and health, among others.

Since its first edition in 2017, MIRF has grown leaps and bound, expanding not just in revenue but in shaping and cultivating new business models, strategies and innovation. MIRF 2019 transacted more than RM80 million business revenue with over 11,000 visitors from all over the world.

Held alongside MIRF is the MRCA Retail Conference which brings together interesting speakers, sharing insights, highlighting future trends and their unique business acumen. It has attracted participants from all walks of life and recognised as an event not to be missed.

These flagship events came to fruition under Datuk Seri Garry’s strong leadership. With the support of the organising committees, he has been able to grow these events year on year, pushing MRCA to truly represent the industry in the region.

Among the anticipated annual events are CEO Night, CNY Banquet Night, Anniversary Gala and so on. Each of these mega events provides networking opportunities for members.

“We don’t exist in a vacuum and every one of us at some point will need help and collaboration. MRCA events are a good time to build those networks and relationships, especially in a social setting.

“I hope these events will continue to anchor our calendar year and I hope to see more and more members coming together every year.”

Ken Phua of Bentley music, Dato Bin Liew, Dato Seri KK Chua of KK Mart, Susan Low of Foxxytong Private Kitchen
Huey Hiew The Socialisters & MRCA 2020 New President Madam Shirley Tay

In addition, Datuk Seri Garry has enhanced the MRCA Youth chapter, allowing better talent development and mentoring. The youth members are able to learn the ropes more closely from their seniors while sharing their views on e-commerce, e-tailing, social media marketing.

Malaysia CMCO EXTENDED TO JUNE 9

Conditional MCO extended to June 9, balik kampung exodus banned  -May 10, 2020 2:13 PM

PUTRAJAYA: The conditional movement control order (CMCO) allowing most businesses to resume operations after nearly two months’ standstill will continue until June 9 as the battle to contain the Covid-19 virus continues.

In an address aired live today, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said all standard operating procedures under the CMCO would remain in effect until then.

He said this includes restrictions on interstate travel for festivities.

“But this doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate Hari Raya, Kaamatan or Gawai,” he added.

He said visitations would be allowed among family members and neighbours living in the same state, limited to 20 people at a time.

“There is no need for big open houses.”

He also urged people to abide by the SOPs, including practising social distancing, wearing masks and using hand sanitiser.

He also said Islamic authorities are fine-tuning SOPs for congregational prayers in mosques.

“The guidelines will be presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay rulers as the heads of Islam for the federation and the respective states for approval.

“I believe with SOPs, mosques will be ready to be opened. The same goes for churches, Buddhist and Hindu temples and gurdwaras,” he said, adding that the government would announce SOPs for non-Muslim houses of worship.

On interstate travel, he said he had been told of couples separated because of work in different states. He said such couples would be allowed to travel across state borders to meet.

“I appeal to the Sabah and Sarawak state governments to give some leeway for this,” he added.

“Applications can be made through the Gerak Malaysia application and at police stations.”

Family members watch from their home as Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin addresses the nation on the Covid-19 situation.
Muhyiddin also said the government had approved RM11 billion in Prihatin (BPN) aid, benefitting some 10.6 million people.

He noted complaints that some had not received the aid despite having lost their source of income due to a failure to meet requirements or incomplete applications.

Taking into account these issues, he said, the finance minister had agreed to extend the time frame for BPN appeals until May 31, 2020.

“We have tried our best to fight Covid-19, and there are signs of success. But let us not be careless. We are still in the early stages of the CMCO, and with many people going out to work, the risk of infection increases, so these coming weeks are critical.”

He said the results of the CMCO would only be seen after several weeks.

If there is a surge in number of cases, he added, the government would have to implement enhanced movement control order in those places.

“I appeal to everyone to abide by the SOP. It’s not difficult – avoid crowded places, ensure social distancing, wear masks, sanitise and wash your hands, and go out only when necessary.”

On the Covid-19 situation in the country, he said of 1,178 townships, zones, sub-zones and precincts, 1,112 (94.4%) are green zones, 62 (5.2%) are yellow zones and only four (0.34%) are red zones.

He said the green zones had not recorded any new cases for the past two weeks.

The four red zones, which have more than 40 active cases each, are the Batu township (Selangor), Batu zone (Kuala Lumpur), Kampung Baru zone (Kuala Lumpur) and Pedas township (Negeri Sembilan).

Muhyiddin advised residents in those areas to take the necessary precautions when leaving their homes, and for those outside the areas to avoid going there.

“For those in green zones, do not think you are safe and can move around freely,” he added.

“You may think that you cannot be infected because you are in a green zone, but let me remind you that Covid-19 is a silent enemy we cannot see which can strike anytime and anywhere.”

MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION WITH FOXXYTONG'S CUISINE.
Mother’s Day is an important day of the year for both mothers and kids that calls for a grand celebration. After all, your mother is the reason for your existence and she deserves all your love, respect, and attention.

有一种爱,发自内心;有一种爱,纯洁伟大;有一种爱,无私到从未想过得到报答;
