Beauty Therapy
From hair, nail, and skin care to massage and make up, the beauty therapist offers a head to toe experience that improves quality of life.

Why is this skill important?

A beauty therapist is an expert in offering specialist treatment services and advice for the care of skin and body, including massage and make-up. Beauty therapy also has an important therapeutic role beyond cosmetics in supporting an individual’s self-esteem and confidence. It may even help improve the effects of illness, and aid in recovery.
Beauty services and treatments relate to the face, body, feet, hands and nails. The beauty therapist works in relationship with clients on a 1:1 basis or as part of a team. The trained and experienced beauty therapist takes on a high level of personal responsibility and autonomy, from understanding client expectations to safeguarding the client’s health and wellbeing.  Every treatment matters and clients trust therapists to provide expert services and advice to make recognizable positive differences in their appearance.

Founded in 1950, "WorldSkills" is the global hub for skills excellence and development. WorldSkills brings youth, industries, and educators together to give youth the chance to compete, experience, and learn how to become the best in their skill of choice. From the traditional trades to multi-skilled technology careers in the industry and service sectors, supported by partners, industries, governments, volunteers, and educational institutions, WorldSkills vision is to improve the world through the power of skills. As of March 2016 WorldSkills has 75 Member countries and regions,[1] all working with youth, educators, governments, and industries to help prepare the workforce and talent of today for the jobs of the future.
Every two years the WorldSkills Competition is hosted for Competitors from around the world to demonstrate their excellence in a number of different skilled trades and technology contest areas. The competition is promoted and managed by WorldSkills International, formerly known as the International Vocation Training Organisation (IVTO). The most recent competition, WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017, took place between 15th and 18th of October 2017 at Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Governed by an international Board of Directors and administered by the WorldSkills Secretariat, WSI's mission is "To raise the profile and recognition of skilled people, and show how important skills are in achieving economic growth and personal success.”.[2]
Among its main objectives are:
  • Promote the exchange between young professionals from various regions of the world;
  • Exchange of skills, experience and technological innovations;
  • Raise the understanding in governments, education and industry to the importance of skills training.
  • Raise the awareness of youth and those who influence youth to the opportunities available in skilled professions.
Medals are awarded during the competition: gold, silver and bronze. Medallions of Excellence are also awarded to those Competitors who achieve above-average scores in their contest areas.

History

It was 1946 and there was a great need for skilled workers in Spain. Mr José Antonio Elola Olaso, who was General Director of OJE (Spanish Youth Organization), had an insight: it was necessary to convince youth, as well as their parents, teachers and prospective employers, that their future depended on an effective vocational training system.
Mr Olaso chose Francisco Albert-Vidal to further develop this idea together with Antonio Almagro Diaz and Faustino Ramos Diaz, who were on different occasions directors of the Work Centres. Dr Diómedes Palencia Albert, Director at that time of "Virgen de la Paloma" (the most important Spanish Training Centre), was appointed as technical adviser for the whole project. For this challenge the most suitable solution was apparently to promote a competition. So, young people's competing spirit would be aroused, adults would discuss the competition results and visitors would be able to see a great variety of trades being demonstrated.
A great number of observers from various countries were invited to the Iberian Competition and were completely seduced by the idea. As a result, in 1953, at Spain's invitation, youth from Germany, Great Britain, France, Morocco and Switzerland took part in it for the first time.
In June 1954, the first Organising Council - composed by official and technical representatives of the participating countries - was established to set the rules for international competitions.
During 1958 World Exhibition, the 7th IVTC was held in Brussels; one year later in Modena, Italy and, in 1970, the organization made a jump to Japan. With the admission of Members-countries from all continents, IVTO organisation gained experience, increased its knowledge of vocational training and applied new working techniques and methods in several trades.
