MRCA COUNCIL MEMBERS 2024 - 2026
16th August 2024, Petaling Jaya – The Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA) will host its prestigious MRCA Council Installation Night on 16th August 2024, Friday at One World Hotel, 
Petaling Jaya. The event will be officiated by YB Tuan Gobind Singh Deo, Minister of Digital 
Malaysia, and is expected to host close to 1000 distinguished guests from the retail sector, shopping mall management, major property developers, retail-related industries, and 
financial institutions.
This prestigious occasion marks the official installation of the new MRCA President, Datuk Ken Phua, along with the swearing-in of the new Council Members who will lead the association for the 2024-2026 term. Datuk Ken Phua, who was elected during the 27th MRCA Annual General Meeting on 18th April 2024, succeeds Dato’ Sharan Valiram, the President for the 
2022-2024 term.
Datuk Ken Phua, the Managing Director of Bentley Music Group, has been a prominent figure in the music industry for over 30 years. Under his leadership, Bentley Music has expanded across six core divisions, impacting areas beyond retail, including corporate and institutional 
advisory, and sound reinforcement for applications such as hotels like Sheraton and Marriott, F&B outlets like Hard Rock Cafes, and entertainment systems on Genting Cruise ships.
As he steps into his role as MRCA President, Datuk Ken Phua is enthusiastic about the 
association's future. " I am filled with optimism as we look to the future. Together with my council team, we aim to enhance our collective capabilities, support our members' growth, 
and shape the future of retail in Malaysia," he stated.
Datuk Ken Phua's presidency will be guided by the tagline "Reunite, Voice, and Triumph for Retailers." His tenure will focus on six key objectives:
1. Networking Effectiveness Techniques – Enhancing our ability to connect, collaborate, and create impactful relationships within and beyond the retail industry.
2. Embrace Globalisation – Adapting to global trends and opportunities to ensure that our members can compete and thrive on an international scale.
3. Continuous Learning Culture – Fostering a culture of ongoing education and development to keep our members at the forefront of industry knowledge and skills.
4. Engagement with the Authorities – Strengthening our dialogue and partnership with 
regulatory bodies and government agencies to advocate effectively for our sector.

drive innovation and growth.
6. Tradition and Innovation – Balancing respect for traditional practices with a forward-
thinking approach to embrace new technologies and methodologies.

在八打灵再也的 One World 酒店举办备受瞩目的 MRCA 理事会就职之夜。该就职典礼晚宴由主
礼嘉宾马来西亚数字部长哥宾星出席,并迎来近 1000 位来自零售业、购物中心管理、主要房地
产开发商、零售相关行业和金融机构的嘉宾。
这一盛大场合标志着新任马来西亚零售连锁协会会长拿督潘正权正式上任,以及 2024-2026 年
任期内新一届理事会成员的宣誓就职。拿督潘正权于 2024 年 4 月 18 日举行的第 27 届 MRCA 年度大会上当选,他接替了 2022-2024 年任期的会长拿督 Sharan Valiram。
拿督潘正权是 Bentley Music 集团的董事总经理,在音乐行业拥有超过 30 年的显赫经验。在他
的领导下,Bentley Music 已经扩展到六个核心部门,影响了零售以外的领域,包括企业和机构

MALAYSIA’S CULINARY EXCELLENCE TO BOOST TOURISM AND GETTING READY FOR VISIT MALAYSIA YEAR 2026
(Petaling Jaya, August 8, 2024) — The 6th World Top Gourmet Awards ceremony will take place on October 3, 2024, at the Sunway Resort Hotel. This prestigious event aims to honor the most outstanding culinary brands, restaurants, chefs, entrepreneurs, and food personalities. The highly anticipated occasion seeks to enhance Malaysia's reputation as a top tourist destination while showcasing the richness and diversity of Malaysian cuisine.

The World Gourmet Platform held a press conference today at the Sunway Resort Hotel, attended by over 180 participants, including YBhg. Datin Rafidah Idris, Senior Director of the Domestic and Events Division of Tourism Malaysia, and various representatives from the culinary industry and media.

In her speech, Dr. Peggy Chong, President of World Gourmet stated, “Service quality and innovation are indispensable parts of promoting the culinary and tourism industries. Thus, the World Gourmet Awards will take a step further this year by collaborating with the Malaysian Association of Skill Development Education (MASDEA) to introduce training courses aimed at improving the service and food quality of the local culinary industry.”

YBhg. Datin Rafidah Idris also addressed the audience, stating, “Malaysia continues to see a surge in international tourists this year, with a target of welcoming 27.3 million international visitors and generating RM102.7 billion in tourism revenue.”

Food and beverage services accounted for 14.9% of this tourism revenue from international visitors, totaling RM10.6 billion, making it one of the top three contributors to tourism receipts, just behind shopping and accommodation.

Senior Director Datin Rafidah Idris continued, “The F&B sector holds tremendous potential in enhancing the tourism industry. We will further leverage collaborations with stakeholders in this industry to achieve the goal of attracting 35.6 million foreign tourist arrivals with projected receipts of RM147.1 billion in the forthcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026.”

In line with Visit Malaysia Year 2026, the World Gourmet Platform will also launch the “Explore Nation” app. This essential travel tool offers a range of features and functions to promote Malaysia’s tourism industry and enhance the travel experience for both domestic and international visitors.

During the press conference, Dr. Peggy Chong also announced the appointment of Chef Bob Adnin, president of the Professional Culinary Association (Malaysia), as the ambassador for the 2024 World Top Gourmet Awards.

Since its inception, the World Top Gourmet Awards have bestowed over 400 awards, with an additional 100 awards expected to be given this year. The awards gala will host over 1,000 guests from both local and international communities.

This year’s event will feature:
Awards Ceremony: Recognizing outstanding achievements in various categories, including top culinary brands, chefs, entrepreneurs, and personalities.
Cultural Performances: Vibrant traditional cultural performances reflecting Malaysia’s rich heritage, complementing the country’s culinary offerings.
Networking: Opportunities to meet, exchange ideas, and share knowledge with renowned chefs, culinary entrepreneurs, industry leaders, food bloggers, culinary experts, and celebrities.

The World Top Gourmet Awards ceremony will take place on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at 5 PM in the Grand Ballroom of the Sunway Resort Hotel.

AUTOMECHANIKA KUALA LUMPUR 2024 BEGINS, HIGHLIGHTS SUSTAINABILITY, GREEN TECHNOLOGIES AND LOCAL TALENT DEVELOPMENT 

KUALA LUMPUR, 1 August 2024 – The highly anticipated 13th edition of Automechanika Kuala Lumpur has officially begun and is set to make waves in the automotive industry from August 1 to August 3, 2024 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. Officiated by the Senior Director of Industry Development Division at the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, Faizal Mohd Yusof, this year’s exhibition is perfectly aligned with Malaysia’s national goals as it aims to attract foreign direct investments (FDIs), promote energy-efficient and high-tech vehicles, and strengthen the local supply chain while supporting the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030. The event also highlights sustainability, green technologies, and the development of local talent.
Automechanika Kuala Lumpur 2024 will be a hub for global industry players to explore the latest automotive mobility solutions. These include electrification, digitalization, automotive manufacturing and automation, supply chain and logistics, sustainability, and innovative aftermarket products and services. It’s an excellent opportunity for sourcing, networking, knowledge-sharing, training, and forging strategic partnerships to move the industry forward.
This year, 310 exhibitors from 19 countries and regions showcase their products and services, attracting professional visitors from over 45 countries. Participants came from Australia, Cambodia, Canada, France, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the UAE, and Vietnam. The influx of electric vehicle (EV) brands in Malaysia is set to speed up the transformation of the local automotive supply chain, making Malaysia a top choice for FDI from global automakers.
Faizal remarked, “The nation anxiously awaits our homegrown EVs from Perodua and Proton. To achieve our goal of having xEVs—comprising passenger and commercial vehicles as well as EV motorcycles—make up 80% of the total industry volume by 2050, it is crucial that we bring EV to the masses by having affordable EVs in the market.”
“The influx of EV brands into the Malaysian market is a testament to our commitment in shaping a cleaner, greener future. This transition is not only beneficial for our environment but also positions Malaysia as an attractive destination for global automakers and investors,” he added.
One of the event’s highlights will be the Automotive Mobility Solutions Conference & Zone, showcasing the latest trends in electrification, digitalization, AI adoption, automotive manufacturing and automation, logistics and supply chain enhancement, sustainability, and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance). Supported by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), the conference will feature over 30 industry leaders, including Bosch Rexroth, Forwardlog, Henkel, Malaysia Automotive Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii), Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), Malaysia Zero Emission Vehicle Association (MyZEVA), Siemens, Selangor Human Resource Development Centre (SHRDC), Swift, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Vinfast, Volkswagen, and Volvo Trucks.
Innovation will be a key theme at the exhibition, with MDEC presenting its first-ever pavilion dedicated to Automotive Tech, highlighting cutting-edge automotive technologies and fostering innovation. The Selangor And Federal Territory Engineering And Motor Parts Traders Association (EMPTA) will organize a pavilion showcasing the latest automotive original equipment (OE) and aftermarket products and services. Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) and CyberSecurity Malaysia will also spotlight advancements in vehicle safety and environmental standards.
To boost talent development and skills enhancement, the exhibition will include a Collision Repair Training Workshop. This workshop, in collaboration with renowned institutions and industry experts, will cover the basics and technical specifications of EV subsystems, diagnostics, repair, and sustainable body and painting practices.
